ASTHAVARGA: This is a legendary formula that is considered the highest herb formula for optimizing wellness and stabilizing the unified integrated growth of body mind and spirit.  The herbs are rare now and so there are 400 year old lists of the substitutes and 200 year old lists of the substitutes of the substitutes. In these lists are some herbs you may know like Shatavri and Ashwagandha and Safed Musli...  So my Ashtavarga formula is aligned with that and has herbs from all 3 levels!

WILD HERBS

Wild Herbs, either from Wildcrafting or Wild Cultivation, tend to be superior to cultivated for many reasons, including more Prana-Spirit-Wisdom-Goddess; heightened intelligence; an enhanced breadth and depth to the phytochemistry which results in much more support of our metabolism and physiology; greater genetic diversity; it is the wild plants and the cultivated that are the plants described in the traditional texts; much more alignment to our ‘wild’ true nature; more support of village life and the marginalized farmer; less involvement of corporate soullessness; and so lets look at this.  It is true that Wildcrafting can diminish the herbs, and my people have been trained and will start wild cultivating.

“LIFE LIVES ON LIFE”

Life lives on Life, it is that simple.  The earth has so many beings, and their Lives survive on the Life that arises from what the union of Sun and Earth, like from the chlorophyll in the living leaf eaten boy so many.  The first thing you learn in Ayurveda is that it is all about this: Life lives on Life.  This makes the ‘Life Force,’ or Prana, to be of paramount importance. Those with eyes will see that ’power’ behind that inexorable ‘Life goes on’ shakti, and will see that the mass of the herb is a vehicle for the Spirit of the herb, the feminine, the Goddess.  But dark and dense the eyes of men have become and they see mass only, and waste the essence and thereby deplete their own essence, which only handicaps them more, and diminishes their ability to be good stewards of Gaia.

THE HERB INDUSTRY DESTROYS PRANA

Prana, the lack of, is a major issue in the Herb Industry though people tend to not even realize it because the world now is so handicapped by the pervasive and very limiting mass-centric world view, which simply has no clue regarding the provenance, energy, energetics, prana or spirit of plants. To make it worse, the commercial herb world is fungible, as if all Tulsi is the same, as there is nothing on the label about the important details of its source!  Herbs must be non-fungible and never be a commodity.  And then to make it even worse still, BigPharm driven masculine cleverness demands that we measure the value of an herb in terms of its marker molecules, which is very misleading when more important are factors regarding the whole herb like Prana, and processing techniques, and the nature of the nature in which it grew.

PRANA, GODDESS & WILD HERBS

Because wild herbs have to fend for themselves and must strive to thrive as nobody is going to care for them, that survival and competitive need results in a more spirited plant with more health factors to offer.  I have grown thousands of tons of Tulsi where we care for the plant before the monsoon, then let the rains have the plant, and after the monsoon, do not protect the Tulsi from anything as that will give a tough plant and that toughness manifests in the robust chemistry of the oil fraction!  I have seen people care for the Tulsi and wham, she is so weakened.  Being Wild is Power, and remember, we once were wild!   Not only is wildcultivation good for the people consuming these ingredients, it's also beneficial to the environment and tends to protect forest and traditions as well.

WILD HERBS FULLY FEED US

“If you think outside the box you will eat outside the fence!” Years ago I composed that sutra to remind people to find more wild sources of nourishment as the standard practice of eating inside the fence will significantly attenuate the core power and ability of a person and society. And so we know that Wild Herbs likely have far greater Prana and a much larger and diverse spectrum of factors to support us at the level of mass, and energy, and spirit!  Commercial Cultivated plants are like a cold house with no utilities, while a wild plant is more than a house, it is a home, with electricity and juice and the fresh air of the life force and presence.

NO PRANA in POOR PROCESSING

I have seen endless examples of the total disregard to the power of plants in processing. In fact, in 1992 I went all over North India to buy the herbs I needed for my clinic in Lucknow.  There was not a single herb company that was not disgusting in their practices, and that is why I started Organic India:  And I have seen and accomplished the beautiful full conscious technique of growing/wildcrafting your own herbs and then harvesting them at an auspicious time and processing them by hand.  The latter can be significantly stronger than the cultivated, and can even have a slight herbal lightning effect!  I can’t say enough about the importance of right processing!  I have grown tens of thousands of tons of many different herbs in India and have designed unique processing techniques in order to retain the Prana/Energetic.  You see, what dry sawdust on the floor in an inner city woodshed is to the living mighty tree flourishing in a living forest; this is what 90% of commercial herbs are compared to their living wild selves!  The masculine and mass-centric views of the commercial herb industry has practically no awareness for the ‘Goddesses’ innate to the herb, those principles and powers that are at the energy and prana/spirit true foundation of the herbs and their power to support us!  For me it is this Goddess and her connection to Spirit that gives the main reason to engage with herbs!  Properly processed sustainable wild herbs optimizes our ability to connect to the herb world as they nudge us into alignment.

HIGH PRANA PLANTS HEAL AT PRANIC LEVELS

And the fact is that cultivated herbs can be great and work wonders, especially in supporting denser phenomena, like tissue, channels and organs.  And the roots of many of those issues will be based in less dense ‘bodies,’ that are more akin to Prana, and those issues will be treated best by high prana herbs.

WILD HERBS ENHANCE THE METABOLOME & BIOME & GENOME

The genome is the fullness of the genes in an individual, wild plants have a much fuller genome.  The metabolome is the summation of all the metabolites that are in play in the body and cells during metabolism. The measure of the metabolome, Metabolomic Analysis, provides a very potent picture of the state and dynamics of cellular activity and the robustness of both the functional physiological status, as well as to the true nature of what is consumed!  Imagine your body is a city and it has hardware shops for tools and parts to support the physiology and grocery stores to go for various other needs.  What if these stores had thousands of items in them but then suddenly only had a dozen!  This is the Metabolome’s transition from wild plants to cultivated: the Metabolome is decreased in cultivated plants, and thus the body has to do more with less.  If you want to support the Biome you have to boost the Metabolome.

RASA AND VIPAKA

So rasa is the taste the tongue knows, but once the herb is consumed and gets metabolized, then it is a different substance!  So much of the phytochemistry in a plant is locked in.a molecule that is 1/2 the unique chemical and half one of the many sugars, or some other carrier. In the cell the molecule is opened and then the potency of the phytochemical is released.  In wild plants that release will be more like a symphony and less like a high school band.  And secondary release is the metabolite and would be the second taste the body feels, the vipak.  So when the ancients spoke of Rasa and Vipak, they were speaking of the Metabolome of Wild Plants!

A LONG HISTORY OF SUSTAINABLE SOURCING WILD HERBS

About 25 years ago, my friend Brijnath and I, under the auspices of Organic India, managed to train tens of thousands of tribals to sustainably wildcraft herbs in Madya Pradesh south of Chitrakut!  Now I want to go back in those vast jungles there and take it to the next very much needed level and that is 'wild cultivation', where more energy goes into propagation of the herbs than harvesting the herbs!  Basically ‘sustainability’ is not enough and we must make it regenerative!   I also will create much better protocols for harvesting and processing!   Prana and the lack of is such a huge unseen problem in the herb business and two ways to correct that is wild cultivation (which also celebrates genetic diversity instead of shrinking it) and processing techniques where the goal is not to dry the herbs but to retain the Prana!

PROTECTING FORESTS VIA WILD CULTIVATION

Constant cultivation eventually weakens the plant's genetic strength. And wild cultivation radically protects the forest as the forest has ‘market value’ as a forests it is a productive factory of sorts.  Just as Santosh, Narendra and myself activated the emergence of Organic and Biodynamic herbs in India in 1995 when from our Brotherhood arose Organic India (The first trade show in India for Organic Herbs had two companies that were actually Organic, and we were one), so I feel it is my dharma to bring Wild Cultivation into India as this will protect the herbs, protect the people, protect the traditions that unite the people the Earth and Herbs, protect the wild areas, and render a far superior product that has respect for the Prana, the Spirit, the full Feminine Wisdom!
